The Portuguese liner was probably undergoing some final touches here, on May 31st 1961, before her departure from the Tyne.
Built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson for Cia. Nacional de Navegacao, Lisboa, she was a 20 knot turbine driven ship, 19,393grt, designed for passenger and cargo service between Lisboa and Lourenco Marques.
She had a passenger capacity of 1,000 in two classes, and for 200 troops. She could carry about 8,600 tons of cargo.
Not long after she entered service hostilities broke out in Southern Africa, after independence from Portugal was declared in Angola and Mozambique the ship was laid up in 1975.
The following year she was sold to be used as an accommodation ship at Damman, and renamed AL HASA.
The ship was bought by Citmar Cruises in 1979 with the intention of converting her for cruising but this idea was abandoned.
In 1982 the ship was transferred to another Lastis company and renamed VERA.
Given the name MARIANNA IX, changed later to MARIANNA 9, she reverted to the role of accommodation ship, in Saudi Arabia.
After a lengthy lay up at Eleusis Bay she was eventually claimed by shipbreakers.
(The above notes were taken from a cutting I have, their source is unknown to me).

Another fine addition to the site .... my first and only and less impressive view of her was on a Tyne cruise on 27/07/1960 when she was sufficiently complete on the stocks to have her name painted on the stern, she was launched on 22/09/1960.
Miramar shows she was renamed by Sitmar as FAIRSKY 1979-1980 only but as you say she may not have entered service with them.
