How the choice of hunt names was instigated is known only by those responsible, stranger things happen at sea, make no mistake, these names are hugely significant in RN naming during the last century, an honour shared by few other types, the nautical association being so obscure as to be irrational and illogical, never the less, a great honour for all the names some which still serve today, including the Brocklesby.

No WW1 sweeper here, the name was first used for a type 1 hunt class destroyer from the 3rd order where all but 3 were type 2, including Brocklesby and Blencathra, possibly as C L on the Mersey had already built lead ship Atherstone and Berkeley, which despite the stability issues being rectified made these type 1 hunts somewhat lacking in offensive armament, rectified in the type 2 ships which emerged much as the original should have with 6 x 4".

In total 86 hunts were constructed, a number never to serve under the white ensign, their main areas of service being home, Med and south to the Cape of Good Hope and continuation up the African east coast, invariably to access the Med via Suez and escort those convoys routed in that manner.

Here is Brocklesby at speed in the Med, note her bow 2 pdr in the bows, generally associted with British east coast convoy protection against marauding German S Bootes ( E boats ) but retained by many hunts when deployed in the middle sea theatre, the twin 4" guns are located on the forecastle and quarterdeck aft, the 3rd should have been above the deckhouse where the pom pom is located, rectified in the type 2 ships.

19 hunts did not survive the 39-45 conflict, however Brocklesby not only survived, she became the last in class to serve the grey navy paying off in 1963, scrapped Faslane 5 years later.

Also, for completeness and not an east coast hunt being on the English Scottish borders, here is the 3rd of the final type 1 trio, Liddesdale, she was a V A Tyne build and also the first type 1 to be broken, not type 2 as in this link, so identical to Brocklesby, first and last to scrap. Ideal.
