SERBISTAN

Postby Dennis Maccoy » Thu Nov 21, 2013 8:49 pm

Strick's Serbistan, newly-delivered from John Readhead & Sons (ship 617), in July 1966. The red shed to the right of the picture is Harton High Staith, squeezed between Readhead's & Middle Docks. The loading point for hoppers carrying pit waste from Westoe/Harton/Whitburn colliery, it became the site of a car scrap yard and eventually disappeared under MacNulty’s down-river extension of the former Readhead yard. A short length of railway track crossing the adjacent roadway is all that remains of this part of the Harton Electric Railway.

Thanks Dennis

And I wonder how many times I have driven over these rails without giving them a second thought?

Serbistan at Brigham & Cowan in 1966, presumably a pre-delivery docking.

A picture that tells more than one story. Looking at the hull painting, do you think it might have been for a guarantee dry docking?
