NORTHERN STAR, with her funnel waiting alongside!!!! No? No! No! No! I am pleased to show this shot because otherwise people might not believe me when I say the ESSO PORTSMOUTH, refitting nearby, had HER funnel removed!

NORTHERN STAR

Postby HSA31 » Fri Jun 29, 2012 7:16 pm

Built on the River Tyne in 1962 by Vickers Armstrong Ltd. for Shaw, Savill & Albion Co. Ltd., the NORTHERN STAR returned to the river each year for her annual overhaul and drydocking at Hebburn. She had a fairly short life however, being withdrawn from service in 1975 and sailing for the shipbreaker's yard in Taiwan shortly afterwards.

I have recollections of seeing her sail out of the River when she was new. Did she have n engine problem on the way?? or was that another vessel.

Yes, she took a shear towards the breakwater on the south side and had to be hastily rescued from possible grounding by tugs. Seem to remember a newspaper report under a 'Shooting Star' headline!

Turners did a very interesting Film following her building and trials.

One day I might get started on transfering some of my many Video's to DVD......

Your not seeing things.........

NORTHERN STAR
In July 1965 her funnel was painted all Green. In October 1965 her funnel colour was further changed by the addition of a shallow Black Top and a Gold/Yellow star fitted to both sides. Prior to September 1966 it was changed again to Buff, with a Gold/Yellow star on both sides with a shallow Black top. she retained this until scrapped. (Info via Messrs Spong and Osborne.)
