Turret Ship NEWCASTLE - now QUILOA

Turret Ship NEWCASTLE - now QUILOA

Postby Sunderland Tugs » Thu Dec 19, 2013 7:26 pm

The launch of the Turret Ship NEWCASTLE from Doxford's, 17th and 18th July 1905. It would seem from these photos that her launch was not completed on the 17th July and Tugs had to pull her the rest of the way off the slipway the next day. Can anyone give any more details of this?

This cutting is from the Cornishman for Thursday 27th July 1905

I don't think the local papers, post 1900, have been scanned yet.

Intriguing, as the Doxford list has no NEWCASTLE and no vessel launched on these dates!
However, British India had ordered three turrets of an unusual and unique design, having 2 holds, bridge, 4 holds, funnel, 2 holds and this appears to be one of them, certainly not a standard turret.
QUILOA is listed as launched on 20 July 1905 so I think this must be her.

I think I can see a trailing "A" of the name, which would support your theory.

I wonder where the original identification of "NEWCASTLE" came from?

Managed to find some snippets in the Times

18/07/1905 - From our Correspondent July 17th: A new steamer, valued at £50,000 and known as No 341 failed to be successfully launched on Saturday at Messrs Doxford's yard, Sunderland. She is lying partly in the river and partly on the quay. It is not anticipated that much damage has been done to the structure. Efforts will be made tomorrow to launch her.
[July 18th 1905 was a Tuesday]

19/07/1905 - From our Correspondent July 18th: Attempts to launch the new steamer No 341 at Messrs Doxford's yard were not successful this morning and are to be renewed at the next tide.

22/07/1905 - From our Correspondent July 21st: The new steamer No 341 was safely launched yesterday at Messrs Doxford's yard.

These BI turret ships appear to be the largest vessels built by Doxfords so far, so perhaps that contributed to the problems. However they had successfully (I assume) launched QUILOA's two sisters, QUEDA on 18/4/1905 and QUERIMBA on 3/6/1905, but presumably from different slipways.

NEWCASTLE ? Maybe all the southern based media think everything built north of Watford will be called Newcastle, which they will probably have heard of!

Thanks lads for shedding some light on these pictures for me. The description that came with them reads, "Launch of SS Turret Newcastle Doxfords 17th July 1905". I couldn't find it on my lists either.
