Robinson Brown & Joplin

Postby Whickham » Sun Jan 20, 2013 10:10 am

I have been asked if I have any information on the Newcastle company Robinson Brown & Joplin. I understand that they may be(or have been) shipbrokers. They come up on Google as handling quite a few KIL class patrol boats after WW1. Anyone know anything more about them?

Yes, I don't know about Joplin, but Robinson, Brown were managers (likely owners) for Brown Shipping Co and also 'T' Steam Coasters and they bought several of the KIL class gunboats in 1920 and converted them to cargo ships, ran them for some years then sold them on.
Other Tyne owners were also involved.
If you go to this page and run through the KIL's (720-756) you will find them. Of course they may have had some from other yards as well.

For 'T' Steam coasters, non-KIL's include QUAYSIDER, TYNESIDER (and WEARSIDER when done) which can be found on a certain Whickham-based website.

Maybe wrong, but was that the same George Brown who was the founder of The Brown Tug Co Ltd in 1923.

Thank you both for your replies. The same George Brown? Don't know.

No mention in Proud's book but he does say that George Brown started his tug business in 1888 and converted into a "Ltd" in 1923. He died in 1925 at the age of 89 (nearly as old as Kevin  ).

I wonder then if Robinson, Brown & Joplin was a short term Joint Company set up between them in order to buy the "Kil" boats and redestribute them between the two.

As you can see Joplin and Hull were only in existance for three years.

The Information is taken from a number of Local Fleetlist Books compiled from original source documents by a Member of the Tyneside Branch many years ago.
Here's one of the entries in more detail.

KILBERRY.
9.1918: Completed by G Brown & Co., Greenock as the coastal minesweeper HMS KILBERRY.
1920: Converted into a cargo ship. Purchased by B Burletson, renamed BOLAM and placed under the management of Joplin & Hull.
1922: Management taken over by R. H. Hopps, Sunderland.
1922: Sold to Reed. Johannes Ick G.m.b.H. Germany and renamed GLOBUS.
1926: Sold to A. Norman-Karsen, Norway and renamed LYNG.
30th January 1928: Wrecked at Brigg Head, whilst on passage from Aalesund to Hull with Herrings.

Certainly Joplin & Hull appear to be "Managers" rather than Owners, however some of the "Kil" were listed as bought by them.

Ohhhhhhhhhh for a Tardis!!

Thanks for all your help on this Paul. Much appreciated.

I'm sure parts of Hebburn are in a time warp, so perhaps we can find a Tardis there
