Well its the way it was recorded by Lloyds, Kevin.

She nearly hit the Pier when she came in. All the Tugs looked very posh when they brought her in as Mrs Queen had just left the Tyne in her big Blue Boat and they had, had no time to change. Bunting all over the place.

Always seems to be Newcastle in the Registers. Is that because the engine works was the headquarters or was the registered office in Newcastle? (OR and I say this very quietly, does Newcastle just sound a bit more up market than Hebburn). Now dives for cover into the air raid shelter.

I know, confusing is'nt it!

Really it should be "The Hebburn Shipyard of R & W Hawthorn Leslie & Co Ltd"
But Lloyds always has Hawthorn, Leslie (S.B.) Ltd Newcastle.

Vickers-Armstrongs (S.Bs) Ltd gets Newcastle as well whilst Swan Hunter and Clelands get Wallsend.

The Mercantile Navy List has Hebburn-on-Tyne.

As you say it probably had a lot to do with where the Head Office was situated as well.

You mean it was all an awful mistake and she should have been called CALTEX HEBBURN?

Were the engine works in (the real) Newcastle?

I believe the original engine works was on Forth Bank behind the Central Station and it moved to St Peter's at some stage. The St Peter's site was in the background of a THROSTON photo recently (on the Hartlepool tugs section).

It was only a light hearted jape, Mr. Appleyard will always be welcome in gods little acre unlike pink hippos with a bad toe. But i did have a heated and none productive debate with Lloyds many moons ago (1992ish) about same topic.
