ASCANIUS (Re: MASTURA)

It was very rare to see a true Blue Flue vessel on the Tees, although we saw most of the associated Glen Line vessels. However, an exception was the ASCANIUS which I recorded sailing from the Tees on 5 October 1975.

I also have this bow shot in my collection which I think must show her arrival for Middlesbrough Dock,
presumably at the start of that same visit.

Clearly visible is her bent top foremast which she retained for the rest of her life,
as can be seen from Harry's photo.

Interesting one, Ron, there must have been a run of them in 1960 as in my little book I have
ATREUS 14/05/1960
AUTOMEDON 18/06/1960
LAOMEDON no date so probably pre 04/1960 when I started to record dates.

I wish!!!!

That would make me a lot younger than you, which ain't quite the case! (but pensioner status does have its benefits!!)

So, I was only just 15 when I started. What would you be, a mere 13, if before your 1960 b/d!?

Yes indeed Young Ron, sweet 13 just passed when I started to tramp the Dock and along the Tyne Tees & Dents Wharves, no-one seemed to worry about a youngster walking under the cranes (well not for a year or two maybe!). Where did 53 years go?

We must have passed each other in those early days! It was on the Middlesbrough Dock footbridge where I first met Harry, as I recall. Yes, I was only once questioned, but not stopped, when wandering around Tyne-Tees/Dent's Wharves. Nobody bothered back then. Ah, now a bit over 51 and a half years for me .... (plenty more to come, I hope!).
