Gregson & Co are leasing three of the Dry-docks of the former Blyth Dry Docks and Shipbuilding Co Ltd from Blyth Harbour Commission and will use them for ship repair. They will enter into occupation on the 1st June 1969.
Gregsons & Co Ltd began work during January 1970 on the 150ft Dredger which they are building for Marinex Ltd in part of the former Blyth Dry Docks and Shipbuilding Co Yard.
The Company (Marinex) was owned by Associated Fisheries Ltd and the MARINEX 1V was there first Dredger. Built by Gregsons she was Stationed at Berwick. She had a grab at one end and the dredged material was put into a hopper, from whence it was sorted by size into four containers. The MARINEX III ex JOVISTA carried the dredged Material from Berwick to Blyth where it was unloaded and sold on. MARINEX IV eventually broke her back whilst dredging gravel from Calot Shad at Berwick and the trade ended. Some sources have the Barge as III and the coaster as IV however evidence from Doug Brown states that he was Master of MARINEX III and it is very unlikely that the Barge would have a Master. There is a picture of the Coaster, MARINEX III on this site but it is impossible to read the name.
By 1974 Gregsons were in financial difficulties and the Yard Closed. The Freezer Trawler Building at the Yard was transferred to Clelands for completion.
I also have a note saying that Gregsons also built eleven 51ft 5in Steel Launches between 1971 and 1972 for the Navy. Admiralty Nos. 7014 to 7024.
