INNOVATION

An addition to the Humber Svitzer fleet in recent weeks - seen assisting ELKE to KG dock this morning. Very low light levels as she passed so not a very sharp photo, however it does show she is now registered in Grimsby. Another recent addition, MARS, has since sailed back to Holland.

I visit the Ijmuiden web cameras and have noticed this type of Tug usually being used as the Stern/Steering Tug fair enough, but when they go out to meet the vessel they always seem to be running in Astern mode. Mind you with the Hull shape it is sometimes difficult to tell.

25 x 13 metres but with all the curvature they are almost saucer shaped!

From what I can make out this Damen design is standard in both Hull and Superstructure wherever they are built (some have been built in the Far East and fitted out in Europe) for ease of construction and cost reduction, in normal circumstances the Anchor is the Bow Anchor and the Pods are at the Stern, however to suit Tugowners requirements they have reversed the set up the Pods are still in the same place and what was the Bow Anchor is now a Kedge. I have not seen any drawings of the set up so I do stand to be corrected by members more wiser than I on modern Tugs. My time on Tugs was a long time ago when there was a pointed end and a blunt end and the pointed end was the first bit of the vessel to slice into the waves although we did spend some time on the John H. running Astern when acting as Stern/Steering /Brake Tug mainly with the Floating Crane that had no brakes at all or Rudders or Engine(S). :)
