A fine set Michael, this would be the height of the Igarka timber season, these timber carriers could easily spend 3-4 weeks waiting for a berth then the same time to dsicharge, all loose timber and working at Hull dockers' speed (or lack of it). KAMENSK was our Leningrad cargo service of course.

Prior to starting to work in the port in 1968, I made various visits from 1964 onwards but only via the riverside footpath, so my view of these Russians was just 'through the fence'.

I remember one afternoon I was signing the visiter's book at King George Dock and the BT Policeman said to me ' just one thing please don't stand and watch the dockers the b------- will be out on strike'?

You could certainly wander at your leisure. We called at the Dock Office in town and got a permit.
In 1970/1 I had a photographic permit for Liverpool Docks
The Tyne were mean and would not issue such a permit as they did not allow photography on their property.
