PAMELA JOY

Postby teesships » Mon Jan 06, 2014 2:26 pm

TEESMAN Mick has posted his view of the Hessle-built OXCAR in Hull on 18 June 1978 at: viewtopic.php?f=67&t=7896

My own view of her while with Mick that day was restricted because I did not have telephoto lenses at that time:

Like Mick I did not record the various small craft, except for the tug to the left which was the PAMELA JOY. At that stage she had just been sold by Clyde Shipping (Tugs) Ltd., to Panama owners. She did not last much longer as during her delivery voyage from Hull to Kuwait on 14 July 1978 she put into Lisbon with fire damage. A week later she had an engine-room fire and sank in the River Tagus. She was raised on 17 August 1978 and sold for demolition at Setubal.

PAMELA JOY (5117066), Panama, 256gt,
completed A.& J.Inglis Ltd., Glasgow, 4-1958
1958 FLYING DIPPER - 1977 PAMELA JOY
fire in the River Tagus 21.7.78 & bu Setubal 8.78

Her life on the Clyde had equally not been incident free as on 18 October 1966 she sank following collision with the DORIC, subsequently raised 9 December 1966. This slide by Albert Weller shows her sunk, presumably shortly after the mishap:

I also assume that it was during the same visit he photographed other tugs:

The outside tug looks to be one of the 1951-built pair of either FLYING BUZZARD or FLYING MERLIN.
Inside looks to be a sister of the DIPPER, either FLYING DUCK (1957) or FLYING DRAKE (1958).

Annoyingly, I can't quite make out the name of this Steel & Bennie tug:

Obviously one of BW's FREIGHT pusher tugs on the left.
The middle craft is a mystery ... on Mick's colour view she clearly has 'L' on the funnel band, and may have a number rather than name, but can't tie her to anything from Dunston at Hessle or Thorne. As mentioned before, I thought all the 'KP' tugs were the same but in view of the bright colouring, maybe this was a variant of the class, that's all I can think of.

I think the Steel and Bennie tug is VANGUARD ex DU GUESCLIN of Union des Remourquers de L'Ocean of Saint Nazaire. She was built by Scheepswerf & Mfb 'De Biesbousche', Dordrecht in 1951 and was bought by S&B in 1961. They renamed her to FORAGER in 1964 before selling her to Greece in 1965. She may even still exist as NINA I.

Dave,

Must admit I favoured VANGUARD as being her name.
If, as seems likely, it is the one you suggest then, obviously, the view was taken 1961-64 time on an earlier visit by Albert to the Clyde. The same probably applies for the tug duo as well!

I'm going to include a further view by Albert Weller under this topic to group all his Clyde photos together!

Reviewing these posts I fear I am guilty of a charge of gross negligence of mistaken identity in the case of the sunken Clyde tug!
Looking at things afresh it is clear her mast is completely different from the tripod variety shown on the PAMELA JOY.

So, as I should have done in the first instance, what other candidates are there in the Harvey/Telford CLYDE SHIPPING CO. book?
The FLYING WITCH seems much more probable. She sank in Victoria Harbour, Greenock, on 23.6.1963 following collision with the WARRIOR. That much better fits the timeframe suggested on the assumption it is the VANGUARD actually shown in one of the other photos.

FLYING WITCH (5117286), Clyde Shipping, 116gt,
completed J.L.Thompson & Sons, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, 7-1960
1960 FLYING WITCH - 1974 CARRON - 1979 KERSE - 1979 SEKAVIN 3

Also confirming the timeframe are the masts of the frigate visible in the background of the picture of the sunken tug. The only Leander class built at Scott's was Euryalus, later to become South Tyneside's adopted warship, which was launched on 6 June 1963.
