Whitehall Shipyard

Whitehall Shipyard

We recently rented a holiday flat in a development built on the site of the former Whitehall Shipyard. The photo shows a sign nearby. I was amused by "the swing bridge in the harbour limited the size of vessels capable of passing through it to 57,000 tons", clearly not written by anyone with a knowledge of shipping. I wonder what other errors there are.

The site of the dry dock is the gap between the buildings near the staging on the right bank.

Fine view of the upper harbour Mike. Parkol are busy, as ever.
BROOMFIELD was indeed the last from the yard, launched 10/04/1902 and Turnbull's yard no. 145 for their own account as shipowners as well as shipbuilders. I think she was about 56,999 tons :)

I think your BROOMFIELD would have been over 2000 ft in length if her width was narrow enough to go through the swing bridge. It only had a 45 ft span in those days.

The vessels at Parkol were ABLE ONE (much featured elsewhere), and fishing vessels PROPITIOUS TH181, HEATHER SPRIG BCK181 and J-SEA E333 in dry dock. ABLE THREE is hidden behind dry dock and buildings.
