'Captain Jack' Lammiman of Whitby
Captain Jack gained not a little notoriety in 1991 when he defied authority and sailed in the 69 year old Helga Maria unseaworthy vessel...he wanted to follow the passage of his hero William Scoresby ( who invented the crows nest)..his crew three pensioners and the local vicar!

He did reach Jan Mayen Island and left a plaque there..repainting the ship en-route to avoid detection! He was arrested on return as there wasn't a whistle or bell on board and there were 'essential' documents missing along with absence of life raft directions...for all this £400 fine.

His story was adapted and filmed as Captain Jack, with the late Bob Hoskins in lead role .

His funeral and memorial services were held this past weekend in Whitby.
