I name this ship?????

Postby creemaster » Thu Nov 11, 2021 5:25 pm

Latest artwork to celebrate Blyth's maritime history it is located by the old South Staithes
I think artistic license has been used, notably with the hull and superstructure colur scheme.
Black hull with buff or white superstructure would cover the nationalised and Stevie Clarke fleets.

Not much use as a collier, with those masts stuck centre of each hold!

What happened to all those superb Shipyard Model Makers? although I suppose an outside model these days has to be durable, hopefully it's made out of concrete when some vandal tries to kick it into touch he breaks his foot. :D

Nope, made out of genuine steel. Sculpture commissioned by Gordon Webb, Local Councillor. Picture credited to him and posted on a local facebook page.

While accepting that it has to be a simplified model of a ship, it could have been much improved if the designer had actually looked at photos of colliers, just to get basic detail right. If anything, it brings to mind BALLYRUSH or a sister.

Well I don't want to be too critical because Gordon has used allocated fund to provide a number of artworks around Blyth, but each one has something that is not quite right.

Made out of hopefully British Steel even better Paul, it is a good sign that at least someone has 'Commisioned' these Artworks to remember what were major structures in the Ports of the N.E. for many years which helped the distribution of coal to Britains industrial revolution which at one time was the envy of the World. Burning coal is now on the way out along with the jobs that went with it some good and some bad.
N.E. fortunately it was not a design of Salvador Dali :D that would have confused those who never saw these vessels which sometimes seemed to look submarines just surfacing in the North Sea. :o

Like the globe at the top of the market place with ARK ROYAL silhouette on it.
Only it's the WW2 ARK ROYAL not the one completed as a seaplane tender at Blyth.
Saw it as I passed in the van so parked up. 1st thought was POMPEY POWER as HAMEN due to the colour scheme
But yes, difficult to load with masts in your hatch covers
