COB (SMITH'S DOCKS NO. 3)

The COB will be taking part in the Queen's Pageant on the River Thames on Sunday, 3 June 2012 between 2.00 and 6.00pm.
All being well, her owner James Muggoch will displaying two brand new flags on his wheelhouse doors supporting the TEESSIDE SHIP SOCIETY (also TEESSIDE BRANCH - WORLD SHIP SOCIETY).

The COB approaches the Transporter Bridge on the River Tees on 16 October 2011 - the day before the bridge celebrated its 100 years - and a couple of weeks before the COB was also 100 (launched 7 November 1911)

Just taken delivery of our brand new Teesside Ship Society flags which will be displayed on the COB on 3 June.

Hot off the press from owner James Muggoch. Flying our flag on the wheelhouse door as promised.
James describes it as: One of the best days in the Cob's life..and mine!

Good to see her also perpetuating the name of Smith's Dock! Not that it would have meant anything to the TV commentators.

... nor would our Ship Society flag! SMITH'S DOCK NO. 3 is an addition to her superstructure since we last saw her leaving Hartlepool on 31 March 2012. So it's good of James to show a reminder of her origins.

As you can tell, one of my early shots!
In fact the very last photo I took with my dad's old camera -
had to use the film up on something!!! (Sorry, James!)

Taken at Tyne-Tees/Dents Wharves on 23 August 1962.
My notebook confirms my recollection that she was in the lee of the
KING JAJA, Nigerian National Lines.

(1911-1979): ON 128814 39grt 0nrt 60.2 x 14.0 x 7.2ft 24nhp; blt 1911 Smith’s Docks Co, South Bank (Yd 499); eng C2cy d-a vert —“—“x—“ 24nhp Shields Engineering & DD Co, N Shields; 1911 (7 Nov) launched; 1912 (10 Jan) completed for Smith’s Docks Co (reg Middlesbrough) [but she was already registered as completed in 1911]; 1914 (8 Sep)-1920 (15 Jan) on Admiralty service as MARY at Scapa Flow; 19.. re-engined - 20grt; 1979 transferred to Swan Hunter Shipbuilders , Wallsend, as COB; 1987 sold to Tyne Towage Ltd (Mick Devlin), Dunston-on-Tyne; 1988 sold for conversion to yacht. Now owned by James Muggoch
