SD15 EAST ISLANDS looking complete at Smith's Dock. I guess this was taken in 1986. I did visit the yard a few times about then, but always on business and no opportunity for photos.

I presume this section of the yard is now the Tees Offshore Base.

Just checked George's Tees Built site and I see she was the 2nd last ship built by the yard. See below link for some great photos of her:

However the year before they built 41 refuse barges for Cleanaway on the Thames. I remember one of the managers in the yard telling me that this contract almost caught the yard by suprise. They had a small team that had always done structural steel jobs for the chemimical companies around the Tees. This group was left to themselves and did their own estimating etc. Their work was never even scheduled into the production plan, it was just fitted in as and when neccessary. One small barge, no problem. But 41 ????

EDIT by George .... I see she is still in service, now Comoros flag

"I presume this section of the yard is now the Tees Offshore Base." Yes, it was for several years after the site was taken over by the Port Authority, but it is now called Teesport Commercial Park.

Now who knew that the name of the antiseptic TCP came from its original chemical name: trichlorophenylmethyliodosalicyl?
