I found this photo and diagram of one of the VIKINGEN whale catchers in the North-East Coast Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders – Transactions volume 1930-31.
The five Vikingen whalers, VIKINGEN I to V were built by Smith’s Dock, South Bank in 1929 while their mothership VIKINGEN was being built at Wallsend by Swan Hunter. Owners initially were Viking Whaling Co. Ltd. (S. Cartwright), Newcastle, soon changed to Viking Corp. (Johan Rasmussen & Co.), Panama flag.

She is apparently on a trial trip, but it is not clear which one she is. See

and her sisters listed on
http://www.teesbuiltships.co.uk/smiths/ ... 161929.htm

In some additional notes on whaling, it is stated that in the 1930-31 season 42 factory vessels and about 230 catchers were working in the Antarctic region. Smith’s of course were prominent in building whalers, some 35 being completed in 1929.
