A news item, mainly about the RICHARD MONTGOMERY, but with a passing reference to the wreck of the CASTILIAN, built by Raylton Dixon on the Tees: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-17513286

For details of CASTILIAN see: http://www.teesbuiltships.co.uk/raylton ... an1919.htm

I read that HMG are looking actively for a Contractor to "Salvage" the Richard Montgomery although there appears to be some confusion as to the extent of the "Salvage" but it would appear to be restricted to the removal of her Masts which are quite a sight when you sail past them and are apparently now at risk due to corrosion at Deck Level and present thinking is to have them chopped off.
Previous thinking by "Experts" was to leave her well alone considering her Cargo of Munitions which if it is just her Mast removal seems to be the case and possibly bury under Dredged spoil as was done with the Vessel making for the Tees which blew up and sank just to the South not that long ago. Any volunteers on this Site to man the Salvage efforts or the dumping of spoil :o
Reminds me of the story told to me by Hector, Chief Engineer of TCC No2 when during the War he was Chief on one of the Cargo Fleet Hoppers when just as he was tying his shoe lace with his foot on a set of Bits his foot and the set of Bits came up and smacked him in the face after the Hopper hit a Mine, fortunately of course survived to tell me his story, quite a "Charmer" was Hector a stickler for a detailed handover if you had made any adjustments in HIS Engineroom.

In regards to the Castilian and her trip to Portugal their so called "Neutrality" stance makes interesting reading, talk about having your cake and eating it especially if it is correct that the payment for materials made by Germany to Portugal was in Gold which possibly came from the mouths of the unfortunate victims of the Holocaust.
