MUIRFIELD at Redcar Wharf in June 1976

At Redcar Jetty on an earlier visit, 19/4/1976, at the time owned by Barclays Export & Finance Co Ltd (Denholms Ship Mgt.), Glasgow.


An OBO of 82985gt, she was built by Eriksbergs MV AB, Gothenburg (637) in 1970 as TIBETAN for Wilh. Wilhelmsen, Norway. Sold in 1972.

1979 Renamed ATLANTIC SPLENDOUR for South Pacific Tanker Transport Ltd., Hong Kong, and seen below anchored in Falmouth Bay, 16/7/1980. Note she is sporting the British Steel funnel logo.


1982 Renamed SALVIA for Korea Line Inc., S. Korea.
She foundered at 24.15N/154.33E on 10/2/1991.

She was one of 'my' ships in my BSC London days and never ever got to see her before I moved to Humberside....Barclays was a leasing company and I believe that BSC were major 'owners' from her being Tibetan....she was named Muirfield as she was, by repute, the same length as one of the holes on that course....So we had the great and the good from the Club down to Gower Street and they were wined and dined and given relevant gifts.....it was hoped,by our Chief Marine Super, a Scot, that us golfers would get an invitation back...it never happened...

She was a big ship to founder at 150,835 Dwt.

BUT she was an OBO built at the same time as the DERBYSHIRE when the design's were being redrawn.

No doubt the Barclays Bankers would know all about golf courses!!

Had the dubious pleasure of sailing on her as Chief Engineer off and on between ‘79 and ‘82. Visit to Falmouth was for turbocharger repairs when one of the bearings failed. The engine got the last word when it stole two of my fingers in the middle of the Indian Ocean, ‘82.

Hmm, that all sound a bit dubious to me ... did they use golf course names for other ships at that period?

George...that is the way it went I know I was there!....yes there were plans for more ships probably under the St.Andrews name again. However, with the Trentwood and Gene Trefethen on charter and Muirfield giving lots of problems they probably decided to slow down....the British Steel came later.
I left BSC in 1976 and headed back into ship agency in Immingham and the Humber so my contact with these vessels was zero thereafter.
