Now believe it or not she started life as Royal Mail Lines Ltd, AMAZON.

Built by Harland and Wolff in 1959, she was converted in 1972 and scrapped in December 1981.

Some more pictures of the Winchester on here Tony. I wonder why her aft upper deck was extended out the way it was. This was removed later when she was converted.

The "extension" on the upper deck aft was just a stores hoist.

On most Esso berths only a part of the ship was alongside the berth
and stores were usually loaded from a barge or lighter over the
stern. The stores hoists on the 36's were rather substantial to
say the least!!

I was second mate on her sister ship (Esso Guildford)

Thanks Tony, I thought it might be that, but it looks like it was built to take the weight of a spare engine.

A Tramp Ship would have a scaffolding pole and a block and tackle over the side to squeeze every last ton of cargo into the hull and make more money...... :)
