Tarmac Wharf

Albert Weller took this general view of the Tarmac Wharf on the River Tees. It looks like the oil-rig NORSMEC I in the middle distance, but can't make out the small craft midstream.

I wonder how many millions of tons of slag went over that jetty! The Muller and Metcalf coasters already mentioned as regulars .... the latter usually to Shoreham. Still, the end result was to get rid of those mountains such as the one between Grangetown and the river.

What a nostalgic view of the River as I remember it when first a Pilot.

I think the launch Ron refers to is the old Customs launch which used
to spend most of its time tied up in the Dock Cut.

The pic shows the rig having moved from under the big crane to alongside
the face of the old Redcar Wharf. The crane itself was only built for
building this rig. The wharf, crane, railway track and all were very soon
to diasappear with the dredging and reclamation of the area for the new
Redcar Ore Terminal.

Enlarging the pic you can see the old back leading light, also soon
to go with the construction of Phillips dock.

It is a tanker alonside, what at that time was a very new,Shell Jetty. Usually
known on the river as SCOJ. (shell crude oil jetty)
