ROSSINI

ROSSINI (5301590): Lamport & Holt Line Ltd., Liverpool, 4459 gt,
completed W. Pickersgill & Sons Ltd., Sunderland, 10-1952,
ex Bernard-67, ex Rubens-65, ex Siddons-55.
1970 BERNARD (British), 1973 BERWELL ADVENTURE (Panama), 1974 AL TURAB (Panama), 1977 broken up.

And to think this is the sort of "rubbish" I wrote on TEESSHIPS!
This did appear over 10 years ago, so may be somewhat dated!

Who let those Thieving Magpies in? Wow! hold on you Newcastle fans, it's not you I'm talking about! This is the cultural section of TEESSHIPS. Rossini wrote the overture The Thieving Magpie (yes, I know you knew that!). One of the old 78s, the big 12 inch size, my dad had was a record of this overture, and that was one I didn't mind listening to. In more recent years, although still an old rocker, and country music hick at heart, I have become more switched on to the classics (but not overly much!). I must say the works of Rossini do quite interest me, particularly this piece as you listen to the interplay of the various instruments. But I digress ....
....and digress further! Conducting a net search, just to make absolutely sure of my facts (I am right!!! - as always!!!! - don't you dare contradict me!!!!) it there something symbolic to us north-east football fans that the original (Italian?) title for the THIEVING MAGPIE is LA GAZZA LADRA?!!!! (Now, that IS culture!)
Could it be that this site TELLs it as it is? Rossini also wrote the WILLIAM TELL overture. Shades of the Lone Ranger and Tonto (for all of us of a certain vintage!)
I would bet they would not get a ship this size up to Billingham Reach Wharf these days! Not very often such ships graced that berth, and a famous British company ship at that. And, tell me, when did you last see a Lamport & Holt three-funneller? OK, well I couldn't help the background of the since demolished power-station!

And I got so carried away composing that rubbish that I neglected to include the date of my photo which was 27 June 1968.

Slightly unusual pic as we tended "as a principal" to berth ships of that size at Billingham
Reach head to sea.

Inward we would swing them at Ichaboe or No 6 buoys and tow up stern first.

The reasoning was that going up stern first and the ship took a sheer into the bank
(as they invariably did ) you had far more control over the stern by going ahead
on the engines and using the rudder than if the bow was sheering into the bank and
you could only go astern hoping she would pull up or the tug drag you away from the bank.

Now produce more pics of ships "Head up" and make me look wrong !!!!!

Tony,

Thanks for this detail, always interesting to learn these things. Thinking back, I've not got a lot of photos of ships at Billingham Reach so can't really prove or disprove what you say! However, I've just posted a photo of the FORERUNNER in the same vicinity a couple of years earlier, also seemingly pointed the wrong way. (See: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=4938) So, you are 2-0 down at present!!

Then Mick pulls you back to 2-1 with his CAPE KILA at: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=918

Putting the memory back in gear perhaps I should have qualified my
remarks about berthing ships head to sea specifying loaded ships.

When light they usually steered much better and it was easier for
the tugs to pull a light ship out of a sheer than a heavy deep ship.

Sorry for any confusion.
