I'd certainly forgotten how extensive the Clarence wharf frontage was at that time,
although I think that in the top photos it was by then unused
(I can't ever recall seeing a ship berthed there?)
SPRINGWOOD (5337197), CEGB, 814gt, completed Lobnitz, Renfrew, 6-1950. 1972 ADDERSTONE, BU Garston 3.92
As the ADDERSTONE she was served around the Tyne for several years.

SPRINGWOOD, now there's one for the memories! She was of course the ash disposal vessel for the Billingham (North Tees) power station.
Her sister SIR FON may also have served on the Tees, although I first saw that one on the Tyne in 1961, where of course the newer and better-known trio operated for CEGB.
SIR FON became GOLDSTONE also with Stevvie Clarke.

Well, 50 years on, live and learn! Something else I didn't know about .... there being ash disposal vessels from the Billingham Power Station! Mind you, where did I first see the SPRINGWOOD? 1962 .... on the Tyne! It took me until 1976 to come across the SIR FON .... on the .... Tyne!!

Oh, BTW, George. That power station? It was actually called the North Tees Power Station (see, I do know something, but not a lot!). Confirmed by its own Wikipedia page at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Tees_Power_Station

Sir Fon also spent a lot of time at Blyth. In later years she was the permanent vessel until the MVA took over.

Mind you, who thought of MVA I don't know. For those not in the know it stands for "Motor Vessel Ash"

Now you have set me thinking about that odd name SIR FON .... and via Google I find it is Welsh for County Fon, the Welsh 'Ynys Fon' which is Anglesey.
So when she was built in 1950 by Chas. Hill (along with SPRINGWOOD) did she have some connection with that part of the world?

Hmmmm Now was there not something in Sea Breezes a long while ago about them????

I seem to remember the Surtees, Shaftoe and Lass were built to serve a Power Station over Liverpool way and were laid up for a while OR I am off on the wrong track...........

But why give them 'Local' names if they were to serve on the Tyne..........

So was it the Fon and Springwood that were intended for the Liverpool area.....

Confused of Blyth. :lol:

It was SIR FON and SPRINGWOOD that were built for the new power station at Bromborough on the Wirral, but in a late design change, Bromborough ended up as oil fired rather than coal fired so the vessels were re-allocated. I don't know the significance of the name SPRINGWOOD, but here she is as ADDERSTONE laid up in Port Penrhyn, N. Wales 23/10/1989. However I think she had already been sold to S. Evans, Garston for breaking, but she didn't get there till 3/1992.

When I looked at the 'Springwood Solo' photograph it immediately struck me that she looked like 5&6 Hoppers with the style of bracing under the Bridge Wing, upon reading her history I see she was built by the same Shipbuilder around the same time as 5&6.
