This was farewell to an old friend, as I recorded at the time.
After more than 23 years of service from the Tees during which, by my reckoning, she must have made more than 2,000 visits, possibly nearer 2,500, to the port, the ELK passed the South Gare at around 1350 hours on 14 May 2001 making her way to Harwich where she will start a new lease of life with her current operators DFDS Tor Line. She sailed from the Riverside Terminal at 1330 and was attended by the PHOENIX CROSS. Looking through the steel works around the bend in the river it looked as though the ELK was being given a water cannon farewell; but of that I cannot be absolutely certain.
The ELK was completed at Ulsan in December 1977 and has served to the Tees twice a week ever since then on behalf of P&O Ferrymasters, interrupted only by being requisitioned during the Falklands conflict and being lengthened at Dunkerque in August 1986. She is now 14374 grt, with a length of 163.61m. My own first sighting of the ELK was on 6 April 1978. She arrived in Harwich at 0600 on a foggy morning 15 May 2001.

Her subsequent history is detailed in the separate posting for TOR BALTICA:
