We had the Iron Age & Iron Barque in Middlesbrough Dock at same time in 1962/3ish...and the Pilots didn't like the clearance between the ship and the locks and the Harbour Master ( Capt. Tommy Hand) reckoned that they had dropped the water in the dock by 9 inches as they entered.........

More likely to have been a draft 'squeeze'?

George, wont disagree at this long distance in time.......but Pilots then were also not used to bridge-aft as they felt the wind more..or so was said!

Having watched a ship go through Corinth Canal now that was a squeeze!

Maximum Draft. 28' 8 1/4"

Depth at Lock, Spring Tides 33' 4". Neap Tides 29' 5".

So very little water under the keel if she was going in fully loaded on a Neap Tide.

As the Length of the Lock was only 160ft I assume vessels only entered at High Water Slack???
