DAVID GESTETNER - I've found the following mentions on the 'net:
There was a wooden hulled barge called "Ethel" [built by Cann family,
in 1894 in Harwich]that belonged to Tate & Lyle Ltd. the sugar
merchants which used her for corporate hospitality in the 1970's. She
was temp. renamed "David Gestetner" and shipped out as deck cargo to
Canada for a promotional tour of the Great Lakes. She was never
brought back as she was sold on!
(RM note - apparently still extant in Canada as recently as 2005)

Anyone know when she took that name?

And, of course, memories of those lovely  inky Gestetner stencils many of us office workers would know and love!!!!

Oh, gosh, sorry, I forgot!
George is a former ABP manager so, of course, they would want everything in triplicate!!!!

Good to hear from you, Malcolm
The Mersea Museum has a full list of all Thames sailing barges here
http://www.merseamuseum.org.uk/mmbarges.php
and you will see the entry for ETHEL suggests sadly that she was broken up in Canada.
Perhaps you can contact them to advise of the name of first owner (they have picked her up only from 1907) and maybe they can find more about her demise for you.

I new the David Gestetner well having brought her back from Hamburg to Maldon in about 1985. Capt McFee was Skipper and I and my crew went to fetch her back after the original crew deserted. I think she was originally the Ethel but I am not sure. She was in a poor state then and was sent to America or Canada. I was told that she was scuttled on one of the Great Lakes but this is only hearsay.

Folks, I'm writing from Connecticut:

Here is proof that the Ethel was in NYC around 1985 (I was aboard her at least once):
http://www.nytimes.com/1985/11/06/nyreg ... -july.html

Here is another citation as to her whereabouts and demise here in Connecticut:
http://www.mainecoastsail.com/the-captain-and-more.html

"1985 - 1986
Owner/Captain of the 84' Thames River Sailing Barge Ethel, built in Harwich England in 1894. This magnificent vessel was haunted by the most malevolent spirit I ever sailed with. Within a few years of my selling her she got her wish and died, but not before ruining the life of her subsequent owner as she had done to me. I am told some of her remains may still be in the mud on the Thames River, Connecticut."

How fitting that she may have died in the Thames after all. I keep my boat in the harbor next to the Thames River in Connecticut and shall poke around and see if I can find her there!

Best,

Jeff

Here's more on the Ethel:

Here's a reference to her from 2014 including photos of her under sail in NY Harbor:

Hope this all helps you find closure.

Hi Gents,

Re David Gestetner........ On 26th July 1982 an auxilary barge with this name was sat in Grimsby Royal Dock. My log shows she was possibly a duplicate vessel and her details as i logged them were 192gt built 1915 and operated by Gestetner Duplicator Ltd with port of registry Harwich. I dont have any more details but i am sure i have a piccy of this somewhere but then thats the million dollar question.

Rgds,
Alan
