York Potash plans for Teesside port submitted
An application to build a material handling plant and wharf facility in Teesside has been submitted to the Planning Inspectorate by the business behind the York Potash Project.
Sirius Minerals intends to build a potash mine in North Yorkshire and wants to transport the mineral, via a buried pipeline, to Teesside for processing and distribution.
Teesside has been selected because it is just 45 kilometres from the proposed mine access and surface facilities.
Once processed, the mineral would be distributed in bulk via the existing port access to world markets, or via road and rail routes to UK customers.
To enable this process, an application for the installation of wharf facilities and associated plant capable of loading bulk dry material at a rate of 12 million tons per annum has been submitted to the Planning Inspectorate.
To get planning permission Sirius has to apply to the inspectorate for a Development Consent Order (DCO)
Once the application has been accepted, the Planning Inspectorate examines an application then makes a recommendation to government who will decide whether or not to grant a DCO.
