Mention of the River Police always reminds me of a snippet/sketch on a television comedy show, Monty Python? Showing two Policemen strolling up a river with Wellingtons on and flashing Blue Lights? on their old style Bobbies Helmets :)
Do they still have Designated River Police, when I was at the TCC they were employed if I remember correctly by the TCC? now that the River Authority has been privatised does the company still employ its own River Police? My only contact with them was either when we dredged up a body or when we went alongside the old Oil Jetties on the South of the river for Bunkers.

And of course Middlesbrough Dock (and Hartlepool) were patrolled by the British Transport Police. Seem to remember one hanging around at the footbridge opposite the Dock Office, Ron may know better than me how to evade him and get photos.

The River Police I came across NE whose Patrol included the Q.E.2 and West Bying Jetties seemed to suffer the same affliction of being blind in one eye especially if there was a Tanker from a Foreign Port was discharging. ;) The "Ladies of the Night" never seemed to have any problems as long as they left their matches and Lighters at the Dock Office as it was a restricted fire regulations area, Freddie Charvilles Taxi Drivers were usually paid in newly acquired ciggies instead of cash on the return ride home with the Ladies including "Scots Mary" ( a lovely singer if you could understand what she was singing through her thick Scottish Accent)usually back to the Robin Hood to do some further business transactions Tax Free of course. Just one of the many characters who worked on the river, we'll sort of you could say :D
