SS DANBY

This is the "SS Danby" which was built in West Hartlepool in 1937 by William Gray for Ropner Shipping. The ship, which was 4,258 tons, was sold to a company in Spain in 1952 and renamed "Astro." She was sold again in 1971 when it was renamed "Gopegui." Five years later she was scrapped. She is photographed here at the King George Dock in London and came from my late father's collection. He was second engineer on board this ship and served on several Ropner vessels during the Second World War.

This also came to me from Steve Lyons. I can't quite make out the name on this - but I would guess ASTRO.

Any thoughts?

Stan,

Yes, your DANBY became the ASTRO.

See link to Teesbuilt entry in George's post above.

Ron,

Yes, I know the DANBY became the ASTRO but I am wondering about the photograph.

I am told this is the DANBY but I can't quite make out the name. I would suggest this might be the ASTRO.

Stan,

Sorry I misunderstood your query.

The original seems to be the Fotoflite view which they positively identify as your ASTRO at
http://www.fotoflite.com/index.php?page ... &Itemid=20
(You will then need to search from Astro!)

The image you have seems to be copied from http://www.buques.org/Monografias/Old%20steamers.htm (halfway down page).

Ron,

Thank you for that and sorry for the misunderstanding.

You have confirmed she is the ASTRO.

As you can see from my first posting, my dad was on her (DANBY) many yonks ago!
