Scotswood Chain Bridge, opened in 1831, is under demolition while just beyond the New Scotswood Bridge is nearing completion, opened in 1967.
The six span hog-back Scotswood Railway Bridge which carried the Newcastle to Carlisle railway over the river was opened in 1871. Of wrought iron construction it was built by Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Co., Jarrow, it served the railway until 1982, train services then ran via Dunston. The bridge is extant probably because it continues to carry water and gas mains over the water.
