Willington Gut

Before the A187 Hadrian Road was extended past Point Pleasant over the Willington Gut to Willington Quay and Howdon the only way to cross the Gut near the Tyne was by a small wooden pedestrian bridge. All that remains of it now are the abutments, access to which is prevented by the graffiti covered fence on the left. I often used the bridge during my bicycle explorations of the riverside in the sixties and, although it appeared to be a lifting structure, the presence of pipework across the top of the structure then suggested that a long time had passed since it had last moved.
