Now here is an interesting thought based on Kevin's first picture. The North Pier was fully breached in 1897 and the 'serpentine' section was removed and the pier is now straight. Looking at the first picture, if we follow the line of the pier it will miss the Lighthouse. So the question to ponder over your Corn Flakes is......... Was the Lighthouse rebuilt as well???

Or is that an optical illusion caused by the camera being off to one side?
