The numbered boats with 'Tyne' on side are presumably pilot boats?

Can anybody tell me the names of the two paddle steamers. Also I wondered what was the purpose of the structure on the end of the jetty.

They will be ferries belonging to the Tyne General Ferry Co, but which ones will be a challenge.

The one on the left looks similar in type to ELEANOR, but she will have had sisters, see: http://www.tynebuiltships.co.uk/E-Ships ... r1891.html

Can't see anything that could be the one on the right.

Just read somewhere that the jetty could have been used to load mines from Clifford's Fort so the structure on the end could have supported some form of Derrick or gantry

I wondered if the steamer on the right might be the Audrey built by Armstrongs in 1897

Yes, that is a good possibility. I had looked at the photos at: http://www.tynebuiltships.co.uk/A-Ships/audrey1897.html
but focused on the 3rd photo showing no ports across her stern and therefore discounted her as a possibility.
However I see in the first photo that they did go round the stern at some stage and would match the paddler on the right.
