Excluding the building-site crane I think that there are about 30 dockside cranes in this picture taken in 1967. On the left, alongside the sloping access road, are the “new” offices of Brigham & Cowan, built when the new 715 feet dock was constructed in the early fifties. The white building in the centre contains the offices of Tyne Dock Engineering. The road outside these offices, where the cars are parked, was part of Thrift Street which, until the 715 feet dock was built, provided direct public access from the Market Place to Wapping Street and Comical Corner, near the site currently occupied by a call-centre.
