Pallion Yard

Stephen Swinhoe sent me these photos of the inside the Pallion Yard as it is now.
It is still a fantastic facility and would make a great repair yard if you could only get ships up the river and into the place.

Remarkable that it's almost as though they all walked out yesterday, not 30 years ago.

The dock is dry,the whole place itself is more or less intact, the scrap lads have been in and pinched copper and other stuff. The biggest problem for the yard is the river,it has not been dredged properly since 1990.In 2003 if I remember right the owners of the yard asked Sunderland council for help by dredging the river, the council refused. If you scroll further down there are photos of the river on here and if you look on Sunderland Tugs and Shipbuilding in Pictures there are more photos of the yard and I think there are more to come.It is a Facebook site but it is a good one.

There is something of a revival in UK shipbuilding, Ferguson at Port Glasgow is in action and Cammell Laird have actually resurrected building at Birkenhead in recent years .... BUT I doubt that anyone would be brave enough or able to raise the capital to start again at Pallion.
