John Crowns and The Strand Slipway are one and the same.
This letter, signed by Robert Cyril Thompson (of Liberty ship fame), was after J.L.Thompson had taken over John Crown in 1946. Although the yard was Thompsons thereafter, John Crowns contracts continued to be built there using Crowns yard numbers. Crowns yard was in between Thompsons North Sands yard an their fitting out quay, Manor Quay. After the closure and demolition of Crowns yard, Thompsons yard stretched most of the way along the North side of the river between Palmers Hill near Wearmouth Bridge and almost to the North Dock at the river mouth. the acquisition allowed Thompsons to build the large single berth that was parallel to the river. Palmers Hill was Dickinson's steam Engine works that were taken over by Doxford Engine Works . The single cylinder prototype P engine was built and tested there before being sent to South Shields Marine and Technical College for training purposes. Once Thompsons merged with Doxfords, Laings, Greenwells, Sunderland Forge, Wolsingham Steel and others to become the Doxford and Sunderland Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Palmer hill became a steel fabrication shed and funnels were built there. Palmers Hill quay was used for fitting out ships for the group as well as one or two for Pickersgills. The huge hammerhead crane that dominated Palmers Hill quay was built by Laings and was capable of lifting large sections of slow speed diesel engines.
