Built by JL Thompson at the North Sands Yard in 1964.

A Sunderland Echo photo of her trials and before the additional supports were added to the bridge structure to reduce the vibration.

She was big news in the town at the time (as I remember).

Borgsten on sea trials, before the struts were added to the navigation bridge and a view of the bridge after the struts were added. A series of similar ships were built in japan for Olsen, some of which were much bigger, but all had a similar navigation bridge on a tower. Some were officers accommodation, but the later, Japanese ships had a very much wider tower and some had the funnel incorporated into the aft side of the tower as well. Perhaps Borgsten was a prototype of that design and everybody benefited from it. If so then a lot of the criticisms about Borgsten might well have been inappropriate.

Some of the later, Japanese built ships for Olsen similar to the borgsten, but with much more substantial towers supporting the navigation bridge. Borgen, Bamford and Bedford were about 54,000grt, Whereas Bideford, Bullford and Boxford (no spelling mistake !!), were about 105,000 grt.
