One of nine SD14 liberty ship replacements built under licence from Austin and Pickersgill Sunderland for Empressa Lineas Maritimas Argentina. These had one more accommodation deck than the standard design and unlike the British and Greek built SD14s that had Sulzer engines, the AFNE ships had Doxford 670J4 engines, built by Doxfords in Sunderland. The six AFNE built ships were: Liberatador Jose De San Martin; Almirante Storni, Dr Atilio Malvagni, General Miguel Belgrano, President Ramon S Castillo and Neuquen2. Similar SD14s were also built for Empressa by Robb Caledon in Scotland. These were Salta, Tucuman and Juyjuy 2. The only Sunderland built liberty ship replacement with a Doxford engine was an SD15, the Armadale.

One of nine Doxford engines built under licence by Horten of Norway, seven of which were six cylinder engines. no identification as to which ship it was for. Wonder why there were six (spare??) cylinder liners standing by a fully assembled LB engine? :o

A Swiss Sulzer RND engine produced in large numbers on the Tyne and the Wear.
Testimony to the genius of men that designed, drew, made, installed, operated and mended them, most of which would be unassuming, salt of the earth people. So sad that they are a dying breed and so little of what they achieved is known or appreciated by the public.

A Danish Burmiester and Wain opposed piston engine built by Harland and Wolff. One of these is still in running order in Copenhagen. When B&W built these, Doxfords challenged them and won the ensuing court case for infringement of patent and won the case so Burmiester and Wain ceased producing these though they are probably now the worlds biggest engine builders merging as they did with MAN (where Rudolph Diesel invented the engine that would ultimately bear his name). Ironically MAN/B&W as the engines are known as are no longer built anywhere in Europe. No prizes for guessing where they are now made in large numbers. The European function is now design, research and development, marketing and procurement.
These were built mainly at Harland and Wolff in Govan and Belfast and Kincaids at Greenock that I know of.

Cross section of a Stork Werkspoor 9TM620 RR engine. Stork and Werkspoor were two independent Dutch companies until they merged in the 1960s. The Finish engine builders Wartsilla would become part of the organisation as well. I have 67 Werkspoor engines built at Hawthorn Leslie's between 1927 and 1979 and four by Geo Clark NEM between 1928 and 1930.
