The new building dock that was opened in 1986 very quickly proved inadequate. A vee shape had to be cut out at the fore end of the dock to allow the bigger ships to be built. On floating out, the ships were towed to J.L.Thompsons (North Sands yard) to have the rest of the fore end fitted and fitting out completed at Palmers Hill, hence the picture in the river with its fore peak missing. Palmers Hill was originally Dickenson's Engine works, (steam), that were taken over by Doxford engines for a while and where they built and tested the single cylinder Doxford P type engine that went to South Shields Marine & Tech before it was taken to the museum where it lives now. The former Dickensons and Doxford engine works can be seen behind the tower structure of the hammer head crane that was built at Laings. After Doxfords finished with the premises they were incorporated into Thompsons yard (by then part of the "Doxford and Sunderland Shipbuilding and Engineering Company," and were used as platers sheds and funnel building shops. Happy days and a nice memory
