This ship was one in a series beginning with Warwickshire (yard no 869 in 1965), that marked the beginning of the demise of the Doxford engine. From the first Doxford oil engined ship (diesel), the Yngaren in 1921, Doxfords engines were installed in virtually every ship built at Doxfords shipyard, the main exceptions being ships that were still steam engines, and many of those were Doxford. From Warwickshire onward, until the last ship built in the old yard with its gantry cranes over the three berths, Lancashire, (yard no 899 in 1972), there were seventeen Sulzer or B&W engined ships built at Doxfords. The Bank Line's string of ships built at the new covered in dock remained loyal to Doxford engines but none of the other ships built in the new dock were Doxford engined. Doxford contracts built at Laings whilst the new dock was built fared little better better. From yard number 900, Craftsman, to 910 Vishva Parimal only seven out of eleven were Doxford engined, all of them were also Bank line ships. Ships like the Iason, Finix,Ion, Benefactor, Fatheon, Atalanti, Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Historian, Feax, Iktinos etc were very good looking ships even though some departed from traditional Doxford design by having bulbous bows.
The ship is seen here completing fitting out at Thompson's Manor Quay. That might possibly be a British India ship just visible at the Corporation Quay. They brought copra, hemp, and sisal, among other things, to Sunderland. British Ropes, not far from Thompsons used these for rope making but man made fibres brought an end to traditional rope making. Fish and chips in Dundas Street could be a dangerous exercise for us apprentices if some of the masculine girls from the Ropery had left their sense of humour in their lockers at work before they came out for dinner. "Manwoman," could be positively dangerous on a bad day.
