Mike,

The SAN GREGORIO was completed in 1957 but transferred to Shell Bermuda (Overseas) Ltd in 1959 without change of name, so it could still be her.

I was hoping the Gulf might be one of the 4 by Furness around 1962, in for drydocking but they all had a slotted funnel front and some prominent ventilators by the funnel.
All the Gulf tankers I have found round that period in photos also had an exhaust extension showing.
Possibles are GULF's HANSA, HOLLANDER, SWEDE (not ITALIAN) of 1962 or maybe the older ARCTIC SEA / BERING SEA of 1959.

By the way, that scrapman's hoss will have a long walk back to Hebburn ....

This was probably from the time when the Hebburn Lad worked at Smith's and passed "metal things" under the fence to his mate with the horse.

Aye, those were the days, man and horse were both knackered but only one of them ended up on the shelves at Tesco.

Not sure if this helps but if that's a Houseflag on the Gulf Tanker its between 1957 and 1964. The Gulf Houseflag was Blue with a yellow disc and GULF in Blue between those years. It changed to a White Background in 1964.
