NER No 1

NER No 1

Postby Whickham » Tue Feb 10, 2015 1:22 pm

Kevin has sent me this fine photo of tug NER No 1 in Tyne Dock. She was built by Cox & Co (Engineers) at Falmouth in 1909. In this view she looks in almost pristine condition so date is probably about 1910. I have seen very few photos of this tug and all the others show her with access to the wheelhouse from the bow, rather than behind the bridge wings. I guess she was subsequently modified.

Also in the background is another Tyne tug HUTTON. See also: http://www.tynetugs.co.uk/hutton1893.html

Yes, pre-WW1 by the look of it. The 1903 Blyth-built WHITE SWAN in the background was wrecked November 1916.
Also partly visible is the already veteran ANNANDALE, completed by Withy, Middleton, Hartlepool, in October 1878, continuing in service as such until sold in 1921. She still had another 14 years' service in her after that. See also: http://www.teesbuiltships.co.uk/withy/annandale1878.htm

A lovely photo indeed.
The other steamer is from the Danish Hansen fleet, with the ....BORG names. Several of these were also built in the NE.

True......... so that would date the Picture to after the 1st January 1923 when the LNER was formed.

The LNER lasted until 1948.
