Great Picture but I wonder when it was taken?

The tugs moored at the buoys off 'Broads Landing' South Shileds with the 'black Diamond' funnels are in Lawson Steam Tug-Boat Co Ltd (1895-1920) but Langton shows Lawson Batey Tugs Ltd (1920 funnel colours) with the Maltese cross.

But LANGTON is also showing the B of Batey on the bridge front. As she also looks as though the hull has just been painted I'd be tempted to say that the Maltese Cross is a new addition ie 1920. Unfortunately it doesn't look like a new addition.

She was operated by John Batey & Son Ltd, Newcastle between June 1909 and August 1915 when she joined the Navy until March 1920.

John Batey funnel colours were retained by Lawson Batey up to 1958 but John also makes the comment that ' A Black 'B' is known to have been painted on the paddle boxes c.1905. So I'm guesing the date WOULD be as above. Between June 1909 and March 1920.

This would also fit in with the Lawson Steam Tug-Boat Co Ltd (1895-1920).

Methinks the Black Top is a red herring........
