LADY ELEANOR. SUNDERLAND BUILT 1875..jpg
This is a rather splendid picture of the collier LADY ELEANOR at Wilsons Sawmills, in 1891 posted by the Sunderland Antiquarian Society. The comments are mine. Another point of interest is the "Donkey Boiler on Deck"

The LADY ELEANOR was built in 1875 by George S Gulston of Southwick and had a Gross Tonnage of 764 Tons. She was fitted with a 2cyl Compound Engine fed by a single Boiler. Her Registered Owner from 1875 to 1891 was the Earl of Durham and from 1891, Rt Hon Earl Grey of Howick. She was lost on the 26th April 1895, 10 Nautical Miles NE of Coquet Island following a collision with the IONA on a voyage from Sunderland to Aberdeen with Coal.
At the time of her loss the sea conditions were Calm, but thick fog. The LADY ELEANOR had a crew of 16, of which 3 were lost and appeared to have 3 Passengers onboard who were also lost. Her Captain was a J Robertson. The IONA was Registered in Leith and was a Passenger/Cargo ship of 1,242 Tons built by J&G Thomson of Clydebank in 1883. She was owned by the London & Edinburgh Shipping Co who sold her in 1910. She was broken up in 1932.

Sir John Priestman established his shipyard in 1882 on the abandoned site of John G Gulston's Yard. Priestman's Shipyard then became Pickersgill & Sons Ltd. West Yard in 1943.

Wear Built Ships credit Gulston with building five ships between 1874 and 1976.

Named for a daughter of George Lambton, the 2nd. Earl of Durham
Lady Eleanor Lambton (1868–1959), who married Robert Cecil, 1st Viscount Cecil of Chelwood.

The famous Lambton Worm on her funnel, of course (the ship, not the daughter)

Certainly the wrinkly worm was a problem for Lord Lambton. ;)
