Shipbuilding at Sunderland

An amazing piece of work by a Canadian who confesses to have "never ever even visited Sunderland".

It is indeed an amazing piece of work.
I had noticed some years back that her had linked in photos on my old Riversea site but of course those photos appeared there only for a few weeks so there were many broken links, whether or not they are still there I don't know. Will have a better look when time permits.

Just to signal that it's my intention to set up a new Sunderland Shipbuilding site, modelled on our successful new Clyde-built database and with the same invaluable assistance of Mick O'Rourke.
The Searle site is a monumental and useful reference work but it lacks the benefits that modern searchable database formats can offer.
It's early days but I remember that two groups unknown to each other started work on the Clyde ships but fortunately it all came together into one effort .... so if anyone else has Sunderland in mind just now, let me know!
In due course, assistance with photos (many already on here) and editing will be welcome.
It may well be into 2015 before anything is seen on-line.

After just over a year in preparation, our Sunderland Shipbuilding site is close to its launching date, currently almost all powered vessels are fully covered, editing continues on a large number of sailing ships but that can continue post-publication.

We have a good collection of photos but would like a general permission to cull any of additional interest from NEM, photos will be credited to the photographer or to 'collection of'.
If anyone does not want photos to be used, just let me know and we will of course respect that.

Great news, the new Sunderland site was launched on the midnight tide (must have been from the old Bartram yard) and can now be viewed and searched at

Thanks to all who have edited and provided photographs.
Work on early sailing ships continues by our dedicated researchers.
Further contributions will always be welcome!

Great , can we sign you up ? your photos would be most welcome .
Also anyone with an interest in early sail 1780 to 1850 and time on your hands ? .
We have a lot of good primary source material just a matter of fleshing out the entries we have using this .

As Mick says, if anyone like Patrick would like to be given access to upload photos we can arrange that, otherwise I think I mentioned before that quite a few photos have already been culled from NEM and in absence of anyone objecting, we will assume OK to use them on the Sunderland site with due credit of course.
