There is a Video on Ships of the Humber that you have probably seen George which illustrates the difficulty of berthing at the Haven and the strange methods used to get lines ashore and drag the ships into position.
The 'Padding' on the stem of the Russian illustrates the point.........

The method used seems to have involved ramming the Quayside at some soft point, getting the wires ashore then using the Hymac as a land based tug..........
