JJ King at Gateshead

JJ King at Gateshead

King's yard at Gatehead was between the Redheugh bridge and the King Edward VII railway bridge.

In this photo HMS ACUTE, an Algerine Class frigate, is ready for breaking with another warship well advanced astern.

EDIT: BrianH has since identified these two vessels as being WELCOME M386 (ahead) and WAVE M385 (mostly demolished)

Also the yard was CW Dorkin which shared the same stretch of river as JJ King.

Whilst this is an Algerine class minesweeper it could not be Acute which was sunk as a target in the Mediterranean. It is also at Dorkin`s yard. King`s were above and below the King Edward Bridge whilst Dorkin`s were adjacent, above and below the old Redheugh Bridge. I think the picture may be from 1962 with Welcome M386 ahead and Wave M385 down river of her.

Thanks for pointing out my multiple errors Brian. Perhaps I should ask the wonderful site administrator to move these into a Dorkin section.

Just for clarity, you say that each company operated above and below the respective bridges. Was this at the same time? If so then it would look as though WELCOME & WAVE were at different yards. Would the house be the boundary or somewhere closer to the King Edward bridge?

Dave - both companies operated at the same time - Dorkin`s last naval ship was HMS Welcome in 1962. Not sure of the boundary but the house / office may have been shared. As both yards are covered in your picture perhaps as well to leave it be but add an edit to the picture.
