C & J Marine at Howdon

Postby Whickham » Fri May 18, 2012 8:20 pm

The final stage of the dismantling of tug MB 1 by C & J Marine at Howdon during 2006.

MB 1 was the ex MSC SOVEREIGN, built for the Manchester Ship Canal Co by PK Harris in 1957.

Sorry, photographer unknown

In this photo of MB 1 at the scrapyard there is the remains of the stern of another vessel in front of MB 1. Looks a bit like an ex warship. Could it be one of the old survey vessels that were hanging around the river?

These photos are from 18/07/2004, when she had T.H.DEV inboard, and on 23/07/2006 when M.B.1 remained alone.

On Hols so I don't have my books with me.......... need a Pickfords Low Loader to get them all on :-)))

But were you thinking of the Two Coasal Survey Vessels that were on the River, something to do with a Trust of some sort??

Was one used as spares for the other?????????

Yes Sir, they are the ones I had in mind ECHO, ENTERPRISE & EGERIA. I am sure one was up at St Peter's basin for a while.

Hope you are enjoying your hols and not feeling too homesick, separated from your library.

Mmmm

Yes those were the ones.
Modified HAM Class, in service 1958/59.

Got to think of the Trust that bought them now...........

OK Got it!!

Echo (J Samuel White, Cowes. 1958); Enterprise (M W Blackmore, Bideford. 1959); and Egeria (W Weatherhead, Cockenzie. 1959) were laid-up prior to disposal by the RN in 1986. Egeria was offered to the Marine Society on permanent loan and the other two were bought.
Egeria was converted to take 12 Trainee's by Phillips at Kingswear and renamed JONAS HANWAY.
Echo was converted at Hawthorne Leslie's, renamed EARL OF ROMNEY and entered service on the 29th June 1988.

ENTERPRISE was completly stripped of all useful parts to support the other two and then the Hull was scrapped locally so this ought to be her!
[But she must have been around for a long time on the River before she was scrapped, going off the dates above.]

The Marine Society stopped using the vessels around December 2004 and Earl of Romney was sold to Egyptian interests as ROMNEY. Jonas Hanaway is, I understand still in use as a Houseboat on the Medway.

The minesweeper scrapped by C & J was formerly HMS Waterwitch which was originally the Ham class Powderham before being converted to a survey craft similar to the Echos. She lay in Albert Edward Dock for several years as hopes of restoring her faded. Her sister Yaxham was also converted to a survey ship and renamed HMS Woodlark.

Enterprise arrived at Hebburn in August 1986 and spent some time alongside HMS Cavalier. Eventually she appeared in St Peters Basin then was moved to Southampton in 1999 where she was converted toserve as a pirate radio staion in Carlingford Lough where she still exists (2012).
