SATELLITE

SATELLITE

Postby brianh » Fri Apr 11, 2014 3:04 pm

In the correspondence about HMS Satellite elsewhere on the site were questions about where and by whom she was scrapped. The copy of a newspaper clipping attached seems to show her on the North bank of the river above the High Level Bridge at Phoenix Wharf ( I had thought this was on the Gateshead side.). She had been bought by a Mr Potts of Low Fell and this may have been his only venture into shipbreaking. Also of interest is that a 4" gun mounting went to the Museum on the Town Moor - perhaps it is somewhere in the Discovery Museum.

I wonder if Phoenix Wharf is a "Red Herring" Brian.

The position she is in, in the picture is lying off Mansion House Wharf which MAY also have been called Baxter and Currie's Quay.
Must have been a bit of a problem breaking her up in mid-stream with no visable cranage to be seen..........

I think we need to interogate Joe at the next meeting! :?

Have found Phoenix Wharf on an 1890 Map of the Quayside Area.

It is marked as "Phoenix Mills" and no doubt they must have had a Wharf. Its just as indicated on the photograph, upstream from the High Level Bridge. Above this there is another wharf called Davidsons Wharf.
It is on the North Side of the River opposite Pipewellgate Foundry.

Phoenix Wharf and Phoenix Mill were still there in the 1960's when the last part of the mill burned down one Sunday afternoon in 1968. It was formerly Spillers Flour Mill. The Copthorne Hotel is now on the site. Standby for some photos.

Phoenix Wharf. The High Level Bridge is immediately to the right of this lot.

Had a feeling I'd seen that picture before Ron.

Spillers were originally known as Spillers & Bakers Limited when they were operating from the Close. The "New" Spillers Mill was built in 1938.
The new Mill was one of the most outstanding buildings on the River Tyne and was, when completed the most modern mill in Europe and the highest mill building in the world.
